ARK: Survival Ascended Genesis — X-Creatures Taming
How to tame X-Creatures in Genesis: knockout multipliers, traps, preferred food, and biome-specific variants.
What Makes X-Creatures Different
X-Creatures are biome-specific variants found only in Genesis Part 1. They feature unique color patterns and stat modifiers: +5% damage and -3% health when tamed compared to standard counterparts. While wild, they deal 250% increased damage and resist 60% of player and tame damage, requiring 2.5 times the normal tranq to knock out.
X-Creatures are divided into five subcategories matching biomes: Bog, Snow (Arctic), Ocean, Volcanic, and Lunar. Notable examples include X-Rex, X-Argentavis, X-Mosasaurus, X-Yutyrannus, and X-Rock Elemental. Once tamed, they lose wild damage resistance but retain their color patterns and slight stat bonuses.
Taming Preparation
Always use a trap for X-Creatures — never attempt open-world knockout. Build a stone or metal taming pen with a gate trap, or use game-built structures like cliff edges and ocean pens for aquatic variants. Bring 2.5 times your normal tranq ammunition and extra narcotics or biotoxin.
Clear the area of additional X-Creatures before starting. Wild X-Creatures aggro aggressively and can destroy your trap mid-tame. Use a mount with high health to bait the target into the trap, then dismount and close the gate. For X-Mosasaurus and X-Basilosaurus, use underwater pens with air pockets.
Knockout and Feeding
Torpor scales with damage dealt, so high-damage weapons reduce effectiveness. Use crossbows with tranq arrows or longneck rifles with shocking darts. Avoid headshots if they deal bonus damage. Monitor torpor closely — X-Creatures have large torpor pools that drain quickly at low health.
Feed preferred kibble when available; otherwise use raw mutton for carnivores or superior crops for herbivores. X-Argentavis, X-Rex, and X-Yutyrannus are priority tames for their utility in missions and boss fights. See our X-Creatures reference page for the full list of variants and spawn biomes.
Post-Tame Utility
X-Rex and X-Yutyrannus excel in alpha mission combat. X-Ankylosaurus and X-Doedicurus variants boost resource yields in gather missions. X-Argentavis serves as your primary air transport since flying is restricted. Breed X-Creatures for imprint bonuses that stack with their native stat modifiers.
Use our Taming Calculator tool to estimate tranq requirements based on creature level and your weapon damage. X-Creature taming is the highest-risk activity in early Genesis — prepare thoroughly before attempting high-level targets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my tranq not work on X-Creatures?
Wild X-Creatures resist 60% of damage. You need 2.5x normal tranq and should avoid high-damage weapons that kill before knockout.
Do X-Creatures keep wild stats when tamed?
No. The 250% damage and 60% resistance are wild-only. Tamed X-Creatures get +5% damage and -3% health versus normal tames.
Can I breed X-Creatures?
Yes. Breeding works like standard creatures with X-variant offspring inheriting color regions and stat modifiers.
Which X-Creature should I tame first?
X-Parasaur or X-Raptor for early utility, then X-Argentavis for transport, then X-Rex for combat missions.
