ARK: Survival Ascended Genesis — Multi-Layer Map UI Guide
How Genesis Ascended multi-layer map UI works: switch between ocean surface, underwater, and biome layers across connected Genesis zones.
What Are Multi-Layer Maps?
Patch 89.25 added multi-layer map support across Genesis Part 1 and other ASA map UIs. Instead of a flat top-down view, the map interface now lets you switch between vertical layers — ocean surface, underwater trenches, and individual biome floors — reflecting the connected ocean architecture introduced in Genesis Ascended.
This feature matters because Genesis Ascended physically links Bog, Arctic, Ocean, Volcanic, and Lunar zones through a map-sized sea. Your position on one layer may differ from another: a ship on the surface sits above underwater Palaeoctopus spawns and deep Moeder arenas. Multi-layer UI prevents navigation confusion when sailing between biome coastlines.
How to Switch Map Layers
Open the full-screen map (default M on PC) and look for layer toggle controls added in the 89.25 interface update. Switch between Surface, Underwater, and Biome-specific layers depending on your current zone. Player location markers update per layer — patch 91.0 fixed inaccuracies where Genesis map pins drifted from actual coordinates.
On console, use the map menu layer selector with gamepad navigation. Custom keybindings from Tides of Fortune ship controls do not override map layer toggles. If pins appear wrong after teleporting via HLN-A, close and reopen the map to refresh layer state.
Practical Uses on Genesis
Naval tribes: keep Surface layer active for ship routing, fortress spotting, and Bounty Board waypoints. Switch to Underwater when scouting Palaeoctopus tame locations or Moeder approach trenches. Land-focused tribes use Biome layers to track mission terminals and X-Creature spawn regions without ocean clutter.
Boss preparation: Lunar layer shows Astrocetus patrol routes and Master Controller platform access. Volcanic layer highlights Magmasaur nests separate from ocean whirlpools. Combine layer switching with HLN-A teleport planning for efficient hexagon farming routes across all five biomes.
Cross-Map Support
Multi-layer UI extends beyond Genesis to other ASA maps that support vertical gameplay zones — Lost Colony, Ragnarok coastal areas, and future ocean-enabled maps. Genesis Part 1 remains the primary use case due to the connected ocean overhaul. Dragontopia skyworld map (December 2026) may add aerial layers when it releases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which patch added multi-layer maps?
Client patch 89.25 (July 3, 2026) with the Genesis Ascended Part 1 launch.
Does multi-layer work without Tides of Fortune?
Yes. Map layer UI is free for all Genesis Part 1 owners. Naval content requires Tides of Fortune DLC separately.
Why is my map pin inaccurate?
Patch 91.0 fixed Genesis location accuracy. Close and reopen the map after HLN-A teleports if pins drift.
Can I see underwater spawns on Surface layer?
No. Switch to the Underwater layer to view deep trench spawns and cave entrances below your ship.
